Goal: Walking 35 minutes at a park.
Status: Goal completed, but rules not complied.
Challenge: Gaining the habit of waking up at dawn.
Something interesting happened. I’m happy I failed.
I woke up at dawn, walked, and avoided the banned websites. Heck, I even completed my longer than usual to-do list. Yeah, I’m awesome like that… But somewhere in between, I fell asleep.
There was a brief moment around midday when I felt tired and I dozed off. To my surprise, it energized me. I’ll reflect about allowing naps even if I don’t go out, as today was the case. But as of now they’re still banned, so I count this day as mission failed, even though it was great.
This reminded me of Steve Job’s amazing Stanford commencement speech. He states he failed when he was fired from Apple, the very company he had founded. Nevertheless, that was a great opportunity.
The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life. (…) I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful-tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.
